IPv6 – Automatic Tunnelling

Automatic tunnelling means literally that the tunnel does not need to be manually configured. This technique uses IPv4-compatible addresses (fe80::x.x.x.x) where the last 32 bits of the address is a private IPv4 address, the prefix is /96 relating to the zeros before the v4 at the end. For example fe80::5efe:192.168.1.2
Automatic tunnelling addresses are supported by Windows XP and some versions of Linux. This tunnelling technique is not largely scalable so is not suitable for large networks. This tunnelling technique will be made obsolete in the future due to its low scalability.
